Indonesia Supply Chain Update (November 2023)

In a bid to stimulate Indonesia’s economic landscape, government officials and key figures are advocating for strategic measures to propel digital transformation, enhance trade strategies, and leverage the booming e-commerce sector.

Deputy Minister of Trade Urges UMKM to Embrace Omnichannel Strategies

Deputy Minister of Trade, Jerry Sambuaga, is encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) to embrace an omnichannel strategy, combining both offline and online sales. Sambuaga emphasizes that digital trade activities should be perceived as opportunities rather than threats to traditional offline trade.

With the digital trade sector demonstrating substantial potential, including electronic commerce transactions reaching Rp476.3 trillion in 2022 and projected to hit Rp533 trillion in 2023, the call for UMKM to integrate into the digital trading ecosystem becomes even more crucial.

The e-Conomy SEA Report reveals that Indonesia’s digital economy reached USD 77 billion in 2022, with a projected growth to USD 130 billion in 2023. UMKM, constituting 97% of employment and contributing 61% to the national GDP, play a pivotal role in this digital transformation, with 21 million of them already onboarded in digital trade out of a government target of 30 million UMKM.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani’s Optimism for Economic Growth

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati expresses optimism regarding Indonesia’s economic growth, projecting it to surpass 5% in the third quarter of 2023. The confidence is grounded in robust household spending and positive economic indicators, such as a Purchasing Manager Index (PMI) for manufacturing at 51.5 in October 2023 and a Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) at 121.7 in September 2023.

Despite a slight expected slowdown to 5.1% in Q3, the momentum is fueled by increased domestic consumption, particularly in the latter part of 2023. Sri Mulyani underscores the government’s commitment to supporting demand, utilizing the State Budget (APBN) as a buffer against potential economic challenges in the final quarter of 2023.

Economists estimate Indonesia’s Q3 2023 economic growth to range from 4.57% to 5.23%, with a consensus around 4.96%, according to Bloomberg’s data.
